The 230 nomenclature is derived from the engine's 2.3-litre capacity - pretty big for a four-cylinder. And since the V6 car is quite a bit more expensive now, those early 230s are the plum buys. In any case, the alternative engines were similar in size and power, and it wasn't until the 2000 model-year facelift that the V6-powered SLK320 arrived. The SLK was treated to different engines as the years wore on, but the first model, the SLK230, sold in decent volumes and is probably the one to aim for. These days, the original SLK is even more amazing because the years have now tipped it over the edge into the elderly-luxury-car abyss, where values fall faster than gravity alone could manage. Don't forget, too, that at the time the E230 Benz sedan had much less power, no supercharger and no convertible top for almost the same money, though it had rear seats. Not only did it have the vaunted three-pointed star badge, it also featured a supercharged engine and was arguably the car that rekindled the folding-metal-convertible roof trend, since picked up by almost everyone else. At a time when any Benz car, apart from a C-Class, was struggling to come in under six figures, the original SLK at slightly less than $100,000 was seen as nothing short of miraculous. At its launch in 1997, the Mercedes-Benz SLK was lauded for being good value.
